The overall premise is simple, and quite clever. The campaign riffs on the idea that being the fourth best at anything is much better than being first, second, or third because, in the grand scheme of things, you're still doing really well but you’re out of the pressure zone that comes with being in a 'medal' position. You can just kick back and enjoy your moderate success - or so the propaganda goes.

Now, the music video below features a song about Auckland being the 4th city in the world. "4th at what?” you may well ask; the song does not explain. But fortunately for us, by the power of Greyskull, sorry, Google [they do both begin with a capital "G"] the internet informs us that Auckland was recently ranked as 4th= out of 215 cities (tied with Vancouver) in the Mercer 2009 Quality of Living Survey (last year we were in 5th position). Nice. What an incredible stroke of luck for the fine people at DDB NZ! Considering that the survey results were only published last week somebody in that team has their ear to the ether.

I hope you enjoy our celebratory tune. It is often very difficult to live up to our JAFA reputation but we do try our best. This one's for you Wellington ;-)

PS: I wonder how Vancouver celebrated?

PPS: A close friend of mine is one of the advertising suits responsible for this campaign. He appears in the video a number of times. There is a ‘lengthy’ shot (2 seconds maybe) of him singing at the back of the 'chorus group' right before the song ends. He is the tall lanky one not wearing his glasses. The video might be even funnier if they actually included his vocal track...and a reconstruction of the wrap party incident where he, whilst gesticulating wildly when telling a story, accidentally bashed someone else (from the video) who is significantly shorter than him...
Alphabetised seed spillage

I spent the entire evening leaning on Johnny Marr's foldback speaker!!!

The following is a longish review of our experience at the first night of the recent 7 World's Collide shows with Neil Finn at the helm and featuring a veritable feast of local and international musos mashing up each other's songs and making a few new ones in the process too. Very cool. Following on from his 2001 7 Worlds Collide experiment, Neil Finn is back with many of those friends, and more, to make many a music lover’s dream come true and to raise money and awareness for NPO Oxfam by recording a fundraising album/DVD to go with concerts. I tell you, with gigs like this, who needs Youtube?

After putting our little bubba to bed and leaving her under the care of our very able and parentally experienced housemates – our first ‘night out’ by ourselves since the birth of our little girl – we left the house somewhat prematurely to find ourselves near the start of the quickly growing queue. It didn’t matter that we were almost an hour early as the air was filled with excited anticipation, only mildly tempered by the unusually high average age of an audience snaking its way down Mt Eden Rd from long-time Auckland venue, The Powerstation. You could see middle-agers who have been big Finn brothers fans since they started, people of my vintage who straddle the Neil Finn-Radiohead-Liam Finn divide, through to those slightly younger (though not all that young) audience members for whom the chance to see Liam or Wilco alongside some other musos was an opportunity not to be missed.

Events of this stature always create a mild sense of unease in me beforehand, walking the fine line between heightened anticipation and inflated expectation, so it was with some trepidation that we entered the darkened room and made our way to the barriers at the front of stage. We landed a great spot with an unobstructed line of sight across the front of stage and with only two minor blind spots towards the back. Not necessarily the best place to appreciate the intricacies of the sound mix, but right up where the action was; a place where we could lock eyes with the players for those briefest moments of shared musical ecstasy; damn I hoped this would be good!

The crowd was at capacity by the time the players emerged from backstage. Neil Finn and crew kicked off the first of two generous sets with Crowded House hit Distant Sun before the ‘worlds’ starting colliding and we were taken through a veritable musical menagerie. One of the big differences between the 2001 gigs and this year’s is that Neil Finn has taken himself out of the spotlight. Whereas 2001 saw the various players taking centre stage with Finn material, e.g. Eddie Vedder fronting Betchadupa to perform Split Enz numbers, this time around Finn and others performed a mixture of new songs written for the (Oxfam fundraiser) album/shows and songs from the other artists with only a modest smattering of Finn/Crowded House favourites included, such as She will have Her Way and Weather with you.

Occasionally Neil’s musical hydra got the better of itself and ended chewing up one of its own heads in the process – highlighted by several noticeable stumbles on the lyric/melody front whilst singing other’s songs, and Jeff Tweedy’s obvious jetlag and his resulting moments of confusion – but this only served to highlight how incredibly complex an exercise this was and how ably these newly acquainted band-mates pulled off the show. For every slip, and there were plenty, came multiple wow moments and several of pure rapture. One of the great facets of this show, as with the 2001 run, is the very real sense of intimacy that develops in the room. You can feel the palpable connection developed between many of the musos through their time of concentrated creativity together, and this in turn extends out to the audience making us feel like we are part of this raw and special confederacy. Jeff Tweedy seems just as awed as we do when the ever talented Don McGlashan adds a euphonium solo to a Wilco song, and we, along with Neil and the band, sense the vulnerability as Radiohead drummer Phil Selway gives his debut public performance singing and playing guitar to a song he wrote in the lead up to the show. This is the stuff legendary gigs are made of: first times, spontaneity, a raw energy and chemistry that can’t be produced by hours of practice but that sometimes grows out of it.

Straight after the opener we were treated to NZ’s own Don McGlashan (possibly one of our more underrated artists) fronting a band including Johnny Marr, various members of Wilco, and Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien. They let loose on a couple of old Muttonbirds numbers: Long Time Gone and the slow and moody White Valiant. Also in the mix was the veritable energy bubble of a Scots lass, KT Tunstall, who had some backing vocals help from a wee girl revealed afterwards to be Johnny Marr’s teenage daughter Sunny (who was performing on stage for the first time with her dad). This was to be a night of many firsts. Later we were also surprised with guitar and vocal support from Marr’s son Nile before the ex-Smith’s guitarist’s family took flight for the pacific in the set break.

KT and Bic performed a ‘murder ballad’ duet they had just written entitled Black Ribbon which brought another unique flavour to the evening’s entertainment and Bic fronted another number of her own. Liam Finn came out to play two from his debut solo album I’ll Be Lightning: the wistfully mournful Gather to the Chapel and the more upbeat Second Chance. Liam was complemented on guitar and vocals by younger brother Ellroy – showing once more just how talented the Finn family is – and proved to be an over-excited presence all evening providing witty banter on top of musical prowess. He even purposefully engaged the crowd in the night’s first sing-a-long on the chorus to Gather to the Chapel. Following on from Liam was a section led by Johnny Marr including his new composition Too Blue, Smith’s song Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want and then Marr song Down on the Corner (recycled from the 2001shows). Also recycled – in the encore trio – was popular Smiths tune There Is a Light That Never Goes Out to the great delight of the crowd.

Much of the second set belonged to Jeff Tweedy and the Wilco gang – though I suspect this was unusually weighted due to Tweedy’s late arrival to the gig. He turned up about half way through the first set looking incredibly tired and somewhat confused, explaining the apparent unexpected set list change earlier in the show which saw Bic Runga standing alone on stage for several minutes trying to banter her way through the break in the music. Tweedy’s lack of connection to some of the others’ material was noticeable (compared with his band mates) but he has a memorable voice and laid back presence which carried him out of the awkwardness that momentarily threatened to bury him. Wilco and the superband jammed out their songs The Late Greats, Jesus, etc, and California Stars (previously unreleased lyrics penned by Woodie Guthrie and subsequently put to music by Wilco and Billy Bragg in the 1998 album Mermaid Avenue) to open the second set in fine style.

One of the really excellent surprises of the evening (for me anyway) was that Neil and the crew attempted a couple of Radiohead tracks which they had avoided doing altogether in 2001. It was when Ed O’Brien joined Johnny Marr in a riff in the middle of the second set that I realised what was happening. It turns out that they played a cover of Bodysnatchers from Radiohead’s recent album In Rainbows. Quite an ambitious move, the melody and lyrics proved too much for Finn at times – he kept looking askance at Ed O’Brien who mouthed lyrics to help the vocalist along – and even the rhythm section struggled to master the feel that Selway and O’Brien put out there. Despite its shaky airing the track really gave a lift to the crowd, many of whom would have been as pleasantly surprised as I. A second (classic) Radiohead track opened the encore set: Fake Plastic Trees, with the vocal lead, this time, being assumed by the ever capable Jeff Tweedy. Feeling the burden of expectation he prefaced the song with a self-deprecatory comment about how the performance might be akin to “Paul Rogers fronting Queen”. He needn’t have worried as he acquitted himself fairly well considering Thom Yorke’s idiosyncratic vocal style/quality. The closing song for the gig encore, following There Is a Light That Never Goes Out sung by Neil Finn, was a truly rousing cover of Thunderclap Newman's Something in the Air which garnered some enthusiastic audience participation.

And just when you thought it was over, the crowd rose up in a way I didn’t expect. After the planned encore – the background music had come on and the stage crew had all retired for a well earned rest – we the audience went on with 5-10mins of solid applause, cheering, chanting and stomping crescendos until finally it couldn’t be ignored and we were treated to an actual encore! This isn’t something you get at many gigs nowadays and so the audience went wild as the Wilco lads returned to the stage quickly followed by the family Finn. Evidence of the spontaneous nature of the extra performance was seen in the ‘umming and ahhing’ about what to play and the fact that Neil didn’t get a guitar until half way through the first song when Liam managed to find one side of stage and get him hooked up. They kicked into a version of one of Wilco’s earlier songs Outtasite (Outta Mind) (the ‘sky surfing’ music video of which I remember from Max TV days!) and, once they’d finished that and looked set to leave the stage again, Neil convinced them to finish off the night with one more song which rang out joyfully, somewhere along the way morphing into a huge jam session for the quickly assembling musos. Very, very cool show!

You made it to the end! This is a small segment from a little seen film by director Trent Harris called The Beaver Trilogy (2000) which I luckily caught at the Auckland International Film Festival in 2001. I waited for the film to come back or the DVD to come out for ages for ages but it never did. Eventually I tracked the director down and asked for a copy. Turns out that he had music licensing issues for Olivia's song and so hasn't been able to release the film but he was happy make me a DVD anyway - very cool. It is one of my favourite films - though is very strange - and I feel privileged to have one of a few copies existing in the world.

(If you like, you can view more of that story here as I wrote a feature about it for an online film site I contribute to.)

The film starts with a strange piece of documentary footage he filmed back in the late 70s with a small town guy (Groovin' Gary) who wanted to be a celebrity and be on TV. He sets up a hokey small town talent quest and invites the director to come down and film it. Harris subsequently remade this bizarre little nothing documetary twice - several years apart - with, first, a very young Sean Penn, and later a young Crispin Glover - hence it is a trilogy. The first remake is virtually word for word but nuances the dialogue and strange events towards a theme of sexual repression in small town America (Beaver is the town the original Gary hails from) whilst the Glover version is a fully blown short film that develops that theme based on the basic outline of the original doco footage.

Harris does a clever job of presenting the surface issue of sexual repression, whilst the major themes are (to my mind) actually the exploitative power of the media, and the viewer as conscious and unconscious voyeur.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I love it!
Alphabetised seed spillage

The start of something beautiful?

I am having a minor celebration because last night our little girl Emily slept a 12 hour stretch for the first time, 6:30pm - 6:30am. They did a great series of sketches in which they portray WWII British Air Force (RAF) officers, replete with posh upper class look and accents, except that they talk as if they are high school boys from the late 90s with all the lingo. The contrast between how they look and what they are saying is very funny. Below is one of my faves where they have been shot down over Germany and are being interrogated by a German officer:

Here is a link to all 8 sketches in the series. Note: some are numbered and some are repeated posts…

I liked them so much that I downloaded them so I can watch them when I like without wasting bandwidth/download quota every time (via a handy Firefox add-on).

Hope you enjoy too…
Alphabetised seed spillage

Memories are sweet...

Back about 7 or so years ago they used to play Walker, Texas Ranger at about 9:30pm on one of the TV stations here. Now, I was never that fussed with the programme itself but, if I was anywhere near a TV, I would excuse myself from whatever was happening for a minute or so and go and watch the opening credits of the show.

There is something that really appeals to me about macho, old school, conservative Christian, martial arts movie hero Chuck Norris singing (incredibly averagely I must say) the theme song to this show. Why did they let him do it? I mean, he talks the first 'verse' bit then when he starts actually singing they whack in another vocal track to layer him up a little so it doesn't sound so bad. Something about it just connects with me in a way that sets off little fireworks in the 'pleasure centre' in my brain.

That's not to mention the lyrics; am I the only person who thinks that they're some kind of ironic homoerotic double entendre?

[Spoken]
In the eyes of a ranger, the unsuspecting stranger
Had better know the truth of wrong from right

[Sung]
Cause the eyes of the ranger are upon you
Any wrong you do he's gonna see
When you're in Texas look behind you
Cause that's where the ranger's gonna be

Particularly taking into account the tone of voice and then contrast this with the overly macho persona that Chuck exudes; it's all too much goodness I tell you.

The night I turned on the TV and another show was playing was the end of an era in my life - sad but true. Cool!

The Tuis are like NZ's version of The Grammys meets the MTV Music Awards minus about 90% of the spectacle and with a somewhat more raw aesthetic feel. Still, the prime minister and most of our local celebs turn up in force and many of them make dicks of themselves for the entertainment of all and sundry (though they are not necessarily aware of it at the time!)

My flatmate gets in free whilst I merely get a half price ticket. BUT I still get a seat at the tables with the judges, artists and industry peeps plus we get to go to the before and after parties if we choose; nice ;-) Should be a good night (Wed 8 Oct)...

On that note I feel like I should give my own personal selection of favoured NZ music for those who may lack some local knowledge, or whose guidance thus far has been received from less than trustworthy sources! ;-P

The following are 5 of my picks for the best NZ artists/bands from the last 5 years or so (in no particular order and realising that I will have inadvertantly left out some that I love):

The Phoenix Foundation

A bunch of lads from Wellington who play a mix of alt-rock-folktronica* stock full of sonic interest. Their latest album, Happy Ending, is utterly brilliant, all wry lyrics and musical madness. Check out this for a great earthy-kiwi style opening metaphor in their song Bleaching Sun:

"Well I'm a waking up, to your crazy shit

And I'm a leaving now, yes I'm a jumping ship

Because your heart is cold, like a box of beer

And I just can't cope, with you my dear"

Other favourites from the album are the opening track Bright Grey, a driving song entitled 40 Years with my favourite little line about birds, and a quirky little number called A Day in the Sun which muses about the desire for fame and fortune that lurks somewhere in all of us (musicians in particular)

Liam Finn

The offspring of NZ's most famous musical son, Neil Finn (cornerstone of 70s-80s alt-rock outfit Split Enz, and of 80s-90s pop-folk-rock trio Crowded House) Liam went from juvenile rock band Betchadupa to an indie-pop solo career. His debut solo album I'll Be Lightning is both critically and publically acclaimed and it seems that he has inherited his father's talent for melody and lyrical depth. My favourite track is the wistful Gather to the Chapel though it was Second Chance that won him a Tui last year.

The Mint Chicks

Angular art-rock, The Mint Chicks is not everyone's cup of tea. Hailing a few years back from the Elam School of Fine Arts (where I now work) these boys create such a kineticism in their music that it just picks you up and throws you around - like in Opium for the People and Fuck the Golden Youth - which is something that I appreciate. One of their more popular songs, unsurprisingly, is the more approachable Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! from their album of the same name, which I also really like.

Anika Moa

A Maori girl with a great voice and a subtley cutting way with words, Anika rose to local fame with her first album Thinking Room - including singles like Good in my Head - but later somewhat repented of it feeling like she had sold her soul to the record company 'man'. Her sophomore release Stolen Hill remains one of my favourite female singer-songwriter albums, in particular the track In the Morning (addressing the often unspoken emotional aftermath of abortion) with its preceding te reo Maori (the Maori language) refrain Ka whakahuia ano. Incidentally, Anika also recorded a version of The Mint Chicks' Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! which is also way cool!

Fat Freddy's Drop

Now these guys, some of the coolest cats in NZ music, did the hard work to record, release, and distribute a totally independent album that created a groundswell in the NZ music scene. Their debut full length album Based on a True Story, though released in 2005, was the culmination of many years work (they were big in Europe long before they made headlines here in NZ). Hailing from Wellington, they are part of a thriving collaborative dub-roots scene and to see them live is an almost transcendent experience. Unfortunately, when the rest of the country picked up on their musical largesse, almost every trying-to-be-decent cafe in NZ played their album almost constantly for over a year meaning that their music suffered from thrash-complex. Still, I like to point out to people that I first caught them live at an impromptu outdoor gig at the Wellington at the fringe-fest in 2001 - well before the masses knew what was coming - how sad of me! I don’t think things are quite as bad as some of the more worked up commentators like to think, but I’m half inclined to say it might be a good thing if some significant parts of the current western economic model should fail. I almost think that the global economy could be course correcting for the glut of over-consumption which has slowly been established as a cultural norm in our society.

Remember when we were younger and there weren’t quite so many choices? Maybe only four brands of soap or something like. Was it so bad? Well the level of choice afforded to us now is unfortunately built on the back of removing such choices from the people in developing nations where much of our manufacturing is carried out. They live in poverty, working their arses off for next to nothing so that we can have whole chain stores full of cheap t-shirts, and plastic crap that falls apart mere weeks after being gifted to a loved one on their special day?! I mean, really?! Really?

So, ‘what’s this got to do with recycling?’ I hear you ask [humour me]. Recycling is one way for us to have a positive impact on both our environment and our consumption habits, and consequently on the lives of those worldwide somehow connected to us by our consumption choices. Recycling, in a broader sense, can encapsulate something as simple as making sure we don’t send reusable components of various goods – including packaging, like tin cans, cardboard boxes etc – needlessly to landfills, to choosing to use second-hand goods (op-shopping is great fun and can make for a cool road trip!), through to repurposing goods that have ceased to be used for their original purpose (e.g. instead of using Glad-Wrap, or new plastic bags to carry my lunches I reuse empty bread bags instead).

Tying back to my original thought above, the more we can recycle, repurpose, and reuse, the less unnecessary ‘stuff’ we are causing to exist in the world (demand drives supply – in some economic theories anyway), and across a large population of people these decisions can have a very real impact on the global economy and ultimately the lives of those on whom we depend to keep our way of life going.

And on a completely spurious note, I think I’ll end this relatively brief and poorly formed musing with a poem I wrote a number of years ago (twelve to be precise!) which has very little to do with the serious topic above, excepting that it uses the metaphor of recycling to describe heartbreak (how much poetry is derived from some form of emotional suffering??):

Recycle

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN-LEFT: 18pt; The notes are in no way representative of the quality of the speakers or of their homilies. I can most likely give you a reasonable summary of what, at least, Glen spoke about and probably a little about what Edgar said as well.

Sometimes I just need something else to help engage me as I go. This reminds me somewhat of lectures during my first degree where an inordinate amount of poetry got written (a small amount of which was not too bad) and plenty of word games were played.

First... The idea was to get broader recognition and understanding of various large scale library projects through a bit of information dissemination from the key players (read ‘management’). On the whole this was pretty boring, though there were some interesting parts. To help wile away the morning I took copious notes from each speaker’s session, but only the words that appealed to me at the time. The following are those notes – a kind of summary of the morning, and more importantly, the pies the library has its fingers in. I hope you get some perspective from these as I have…

(NB: Speakers’ names have been shortened to initials to provide some measure of anonymity)

INTRODUCTION
HR said: A friend referred to my local rugby team as "The Bluesers" due to them losing their first two games of the season. I thought it was a pretty amusing title and it suited my mood after two disappointing results. I've always liked watching movies, so seeing shorts, trailers, previews - whichever you prefer - was something of a bonus rather than a necessary evil to fast-forward through (corded remote control not withstanding).

For me nowadays these things - Previews - tend be (s)wanky affairs involving a lot of standing round drinking wine and eating nibbles (unless you get there early and get one of the too few seats) with a bunch of other people all looking round to see if they can spot that elusive "somebody". I often wonder who the rest of the people in the crowd are and why they're there. They can't all be reviewers can they? Sure, there are likely to be members of the cast and crew and their families and friends - if it's a local production. There'll be a couple of people from the distribution company, and of course everyone gets two comps so friends, partners and spouses thicken the mix. Still that must leave a fair gaggle of opinionated egotists, perhaps like myself, who feel that their thoughts are of great value and may somehow be representative. Scary.

A couple of glasses of wine, maybe some coffee, and a few of those small chicken 'bits' later and you're in a theatre whilst someone of relative importance is near the front - though usually off to the side?!? - giving a wee spiel about the film, inevitably ending with their own personal take on the "I hope you like it" plea. To be honest, I totally agree. I hope I like it too. And sometimes, after the next hour or two or three of viewing I come to the conclusion that I do. Sometimes I don't. But hey, I didn't pay to be here, and I get to say what I think about the film regardless.

Once the film ends the whole show is over pretty quickly and everyone disperses - some looking pensive, others verbally climaxing right in front of everyone. The wine and nibbles are long forgotten. The introductory spiel a distant dream. Hopefully the contents of the film are not quite so easily lost.

We get to see films before they are officially released then have the responsibility of giving some sense of what an audience can expect, without spelling out the storyline. The ironic thing is that these film previews almost never come with film previews...

*Actually, we only got our first video player when I was about 11. The first movie I rented was Conan the Barbarian.
